After a decade of reversing, I got co-op working in DOS Wing Commander
Adds two-player co-op to classic DOS Wing Commander, built by reversing its raw memory.
A years-long reverse-engineering effort found where classic Wing Commander keeps player position, camera angle and velocity inside its 640K of DOS memory, then used that to sync a second player's ship over a network as a real wingmate instead of sharing one cockpit. The write-up walks through the actual method: snapshotting memory while stopped versus moving, diffing which bytes changed, then confirming candidates by poking values live with the DOSBox debugger. You can play it directly in the browser or watch a video of it running.
What holds up
- +Playable directly in the browser, no DOSBox setup of your own required
- +Write-up shows the real reverse-engineering technique with actual memory diffs, not just the result
- +Free to play
Mind the limits
- −Covers one specific 1990s DOS game, not a general co-op patch for other titles
