Dusty
Open-source Mac cleaner that only deletes from a fixed allowlist and shows every path first.
Dusty reclaims disk space from app caches, Xcode data, package-manager caches and stale project artifacts, but it can only ever delete paths on a fixed, readable allowlist — Documents, Desktop, Photos, Mail, iCloud Drive and Keychains are rejected even as path prefixes. It shows every path and its exact size before removing anything, never follows symlinks, never runs as root, and logs every deletion with timestamp, path and byte count to a plain JSON file you can open anytime. It's free and MIT-licensed against CleanMyMac's paid subscription and closed deletion rules, and Developer/Deep cleanups land in the Trash with an undo window rather than deleting outright.
What holds up
- +Deletes only from a fixed, readable allowlist — protected folders are rejected even as path prefixes
- +Logs every deletion (timestamp, path, exact bytes) to a plain JSON file you can audit anytime
- +Free and MIT-licensed against CleanMyMac's paid subscription, with the deletion rules open to read
Mind the limits
- −Requires macOS 13 or newer — older Macs can't install it
- −Some Deep-level cleanups need Full Disk Access — extra permission granting before it can clean everything
