IconCraft
Renames and re-icons any Mac app without touching the app itself — free and open source.
IconCraft lets you give any Mac app a different name and icon — like putting Acrobat's face on the PDF reader you switched to — without changing the app's code, files or behavior underneath. It covers 113 apps and macOS's eleven scattered default-app settings in one searchable list, journals every change so it's fully reversible, and reapplies your icon even if an app update reverts it. It's free and open source, pay-what-you-want, with zero accounts or telemetry and everything running locally on macOS 12.3+; Windows and Linux support is still in development.
What holds up
- +Free and open source, pay-what-you-want — no required purchase
- +Zero accounts or telemetry; everything runs and stays on your Mac
- +Journals every change, so one click restores a single app or everything
Mind the limits
- −macOS only for now — Windows and Linux are 'coming soon' with no date given
- −Purely cosmetic — it changes the name and face, not anything the app actually does
