inlaut
Dictates German and English locally via push-to-talk, typing straight at your cursor.
inlaut is a Mac app for push-to-talk dictation: hold a key, speak in German, English or mixed mid-sentence, and it types the transcript directly into whatever field has focus. Speech recognition runs locally via a roughly 630MB on-device model, or Apple's own local recognizer, so nothing is sent to the cloud, there's no account, and recordings aren't saved as history. It's free, requires macOS 26 or newer on Apple Silicon, and lets you define custom text replacements for terms it keeps getting wrong.

What holds up
- +Runs entirely on-device — recordings and dictation are never saved as history or sent out.
- +Handles German and English mixed in the same sentence, not just one fixed language.
- +Free, with custom replacements to fix recurring misspellings of names or jargon.
Mind the limits
- −Requires macOS 26 or newer on Apple Silicon — no Intel Mac or older macOS support.
- −Mac only — no Windows or Linux version.
