OpenScreen records your screen through the OS's own capture path (ScreenCaptureKit, Windows Graphics Capture or PipeWire), then lets you edit the result like a text transcript — delete a word or a silence and the cut lands on the timeline nondestructively. The cursor is recorded as data separate from the pixels, so you can change its size, style or motion blur after the fact, and zooms get placed automatically from where you clicked, by a fixed rule with no AI and no network call if you'd rather turn that off. Background blur or removal runs through a local segmentation model, so nothing is uploaded. It's free and open source, with an MCP server for agents to drive it.

What holds up

  • +Cursor is recorded separately from the pixels, so you can restyle it after recording
  • +Background removal runs through a local segmentation model — nothing uploaded
  • +Zoom placement is a fixed rule by default, not AI, with no network call
  • +Free and open source

Mind the limits

  • −Desktop only, across macOS, Windows and Linux — no mobile screen recording mentioned
