Popkern is an open-source, free boundary-representation CAD kernel where parts are short Rhai scripts instead of mouse-driven CAD history — bigger assemblies grow as folders of numbered migration scripts, git-friendly like database migrations. It already handles booleans, fillets and chamfers with genuinely curvature-continuous corners, sweeps, revolves, lofts, sketches with constraints and STEP import/export, and threads are modeled to ISO spec rather than a texture. It's written by AI agents under human direction, with every change checked against thousands of automated tests and cross-referenced against OpenCASCADE, and it declines an operation rather than returning a broken solid.

What holds up

  • +AGPL-3.0 for the kernel, but an exception keeps your scripts, models and STEP files fully yours.
  • +Every change is checked against thousands of automated tests and cross-checked against OpenCASCADE.
  • +Threads and gears are modeled to real ISO/involute geometry, not applied as a surface texture.
  • +Declines an operation it can't complete rather than silently handing back a broken solid.

Mind the limits

  • −Early-stage: the launch post is explicit that plenty of CAD functionality still doesn't work yet.
  • −Built by AI agents under human direction — a different trust model than a kernel written by hand.
