Qingjian is a Rust-based pinyin input method that reorders candidates with an on-device model and adds one translation of your target language next to each candidate — English or Japanese, one language at a time. Everything (pinyin, lexicon, sentence model, learning, definitions) runs locally with no network calls; an optional cloud AI assist for sentence completion and lookup is off by default. It explicitly refuses to cram in five or six languages, pop quizzes, or forced vocabulary drills — input speed comes first, learning second.

What holds up

  • +Runs fully on-device — pinyin, dictionary, sentence model and learning never touch the network.
  • +One translation hint per candidate, not a cluttered row of five languages at once.
  • +States outright what it won't do: no pop quizzes, no forced drills, no UI that slows down typing.

Mind the limits

  • −Only one target language at a time — switch languages and you lose the other's hints.
  • −Optional cloud AI features mean handing your own API key to a third-party provider.
  • −macOS and Windows only, with no mention of Linux or mobile support.
