ScreenForge
Records and edits screen videos in one native app, with auto-zoom and GPU-rendered export.
ScreenForge combines screen recording and a timeline editor in one native window, rendered on the GPU instead of Electron. It automatically zooms on clicks and typing, keeps your voice on its own track, and exports to MP4, ProRes, GIF or WebM. Recording and editing are free and open source; after your first three exports, an offline-verified license ($10/month or $29 once for a lifetime key) is needed to keep exporting, with no account or phone-home.

What holds up
- +Native GPU-rendered app, not Electron — recording and editing stay fast and responsive.
- +Opens and saves .screenstudio projects — existing Screen Studio recordings keep working here.
- +First three exports are free forever, and recording/editing never require a license.
- +License checks happen fully offline, no account — nothing phones home when you export.
- +Apache-2.0 source — build it yourself and remove the export gate entirely.
Mind the limits
- −Exporting past the first three free clips needs a paid license ($10/mo or $29 once).
- −Captions, masks, crop and device frames aren't built yet — the roadmap lists them as greyed out.
- −Only a macOS download link is given, though the tagline also claims Linux support.
