Sphinx – A hook that quizzes you on your AI's code before shipping

A git hook that quizzes you about your AI-written diff before letting you push.

Sphinx is a free, open-source git hook: before a protected branch accepts a push, it reads the diff and asks a question about what the code actually does when things go wrong — like what happens on a Stripe webhook retry. Answer wrong and it explains why and asks again; answer right and the push continues. It works with Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode, Pi, or plain git, runs on minimal tokens, and never opens .env files or secrets. `sphinx yolo` lets you skip the check, but every skip gets logged.

What holds up

  • +Free and open source, with no paid tier at all.
  • +Questions come from your actual diff, not a canned quiz — tests real understanding.
  • +Never opens .env files or keys, and your answers never reach the coding agent.
  • +`sphinx yolo` lets you skip in a hurry, but every skip is logged — no silent bypass.

Mind the limits

  • −Needs Node 22.19+ on macOS, Linux, or WSL — no native Windows support mentioned.
  • −Adds a manual question-and-answer step to every protected push — friction if you push often.
