Spotifast is a native Rust app (formerly Fastpotify) for Linux, macOS and Windows that starts in under a second and uses 100-250MB of RAM, playing locally at up to 320kbps or controlling Spotify Connect devices from the same window. It also doubles as a Winamp-style mini player that loads classic .wsz skins, and includes a MilkDrop visualizer with over 10,000 presets downloaded on first use. It's MIT-licensed and open source, with docs explaining exactly what it connects to and what credentials it stores.

What holds up

  • +No browser engine — starts in under a second and uses just 100-250MB of RAM
  • +MIT-licensed with docs detailing its network connections and stored credentials
  • +Doubles as a Winamp skin player and MilkDrop visualizer, not just a Spotify client

Mind the limits

  • Still requires a Spotify account and subscription to use — it's a client, not a replacement service
  • Local playback and skin/visualizer features add complexity beyond what a simple Connect remote needs
