TBD
Native Mac app for downloading YouTube videos, built on yt-dlp, with remote control from your phone.
TBD is a native Swift menu-bar app that downloads YouTube videos straight to disk — no account, no server in between — and the yt-dlp engine it's built on updates itself, so links that worked last month keep working. It resumes a download from the same byte if the app closes mid-transfer, queues whole playlists in the background, and defaults to MP4 (H.264+AAC) so files open in QuickTime or any editor with no conversion step. A QR code lets you paste a link from your phone and have it download on your Mac over your own local network. It's free forever, 39 MB, and currently focused purely on YouTube — other platforms are planned, not yet shipped.
What holds up
- +Built on yt-dlp, which updates itself inside the app — a link that worked last month still works today.
- +Resumes a download from the same byte if the app closes or the connection drops mid-transfer.
- +Free forever by design — the download runs on your Mac, so there's no server cost to recoup.
- +Source code is on GitHub, so you can check what the app does with your links yourself.
Mind the limits
- −Focused purely on YouTube for now — support for other platforms is "planned," not available.
- −Apple Silicon Mac only, macOS 13 or later — no Intel Mac, Windows or Linux build.
